Sheldon and his wife Raye Isenberg  co-founded Isenberg & Associates in 1980, sold it in 2008, and co-founded Isenberg Counseling, LLC. Raye retired from active practice in 2010.  Sheldon is among the most experienced counselors in Naperville, having counseled thousands of individuals and couples. Married over 50 years, and having raised a family, they know what works in living a respectful, negotiated and loving life together.

AAMFTSheldon (Shelly) Isenberg has been counseling others in private practice since 1969, and received his Master’s in Social Work Sheldon (Shelly) Isenberg from the University of Chicago in 1967. He is a Clinical Fellow of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, a Board Certified Diplomate in Clinical Social Work, and is listed with the National Registry of Marriage Friendly Therapists.  A member of the National Association of Social Workers,  his chapter awarded him a Life-Time Achievement Award for his professional work with clients and his work in furthering the Social Work profession in Illinois. He is listed with Theravive, and Psychology Today.

A seasoned therapist who listens carefully, Shelly engages personally with his clients to help them with their goals. He believes personal problems deserve personalized attention.

Shelly’s practice involves working with issues of depression, anger, anxiety and those disruptions of life such as divorce, infidelity and medical issues. Mid-life and later life transitional issues of aging, career, downsizing, marital change and marital commitment bring people to consult with him. As Shelly has aged, he brings a particular sensitivity to the practical decision-making of aging.

Shelly has a special interest in helping men deal with being the men they want to be and relating successfully to the women they love. He also works very well with the many women having problems with the men in their lives. His reputation for effective couples’ marital counseling has led to his working with young couples having pre-marital, pre-family and early marital issues and helping them on with the lives they want for themselves together.

He also helps individuals and couples connect in their relationships without overlooking their meaningful differences.  For Shelly, the experience of attraction and becoming a healthier, more vibrant couple is spiritual in its essence. He is very sensitive to variations in lifestyle and values, inter-faith and inter-cultural differences that arise in our multi-cultural society.

As a business owner, Shelly enjoys working with the business issues many of his clients deal with every day. He was an active member of the Naperville Chamber of Commerce for 25 years. He provides executive counseling on business relationship issues which cause personal stress, and helps clients to deal with those personal issues that are getting in the way of business success. Family business relationships and entrepreneurial couples are a specialty.

Shelly’s experience in successful practice development and maintenance over the years uniquely qualifies him to consult with other counseling professionals in attaining practice satisfaction and success. He has a long history of providing clinical consultation to practicing counseling professionals.
